The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. on January 13, 1913 by 22 women who were committed to change. The sorority’s motto is “Intelligence is the Torch of Wisdom.” Their official colors are crimson and cream. With a membership of more than 250,000 women in over 950 chapters, Delta Sigma Theta is currently the largest black Greek sorority. Interested individuals can join through undergraduate chapters at a college or university, or through a graduate chapter after acquiring a college degree. Famous Deltas include actress Ruby Dee Davis and Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs-Jones.
