The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the first intercollegiate African American sorority, was founded on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. on January 15, 1908 by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, Anna Easter Brown, Beulah Burke, Lillie Burke, Marjorie Hill, Margaret Flagg Holmes, Lavinia Norman, Lucy Slowe, and Marie Woolfolk Taylor. Its founding principles are sisterhood, scholarship, and service to ALL mankind. Their official colors are salmon pink and apple green. With a nucleus of more than 200,000 women in over 950 chapters, Alpha Kappa Alpha has remained committed to helping to better the community. Interested individuals can join through undergraduate chapters at a college or university, or through a graduate chapter, after acquiring a college degree. Famous AKAs include Coretta Scott King and Phylicia Rashad.
